01/05 Summary

Pupils and students have school books from which they learn vocabulary. A single book alone makes learning vocabulary one-sided, inflexible and dull.

With VocApp, pupils and students can load the vocabulary of the different books into the app, to organize and practice all vocabulary according to the languages and chapters.

This is a concept for VocApp, which enables many students to be learn vocabulary more productively and have more fun.

02/05 Problem Statement

Learning vocabulary from
schoolbooks only

Learning experience is still mainly based on printed schoolbooks. When students learn multiple languages, they have different schoolbooks to deal with. Learning vocabulary the traditional way is cumbersome and not fun, especially in today's digital world.

Many schoolbook publishers have already recognized that learning vocabulary using textbooks only is not the most effective way.

Some publishers have launched apps that students can download and learn vocabulary interactively. Unfortunately, this is still a rarity which motivated me to create the VonApp solution and openly share it.

Learning vocabulary with VocApp

I created a concept and design for an app called VocApp. It helps students to organize their vocabulary and evaluate results for every chapter. With VocApp, students have the possibility to practice the vocabulary that's currently of interest to them interactively on their smartphones - at any time and in any place.

The target group is people who are learning one or more languages. They don't do this via an app on their own, but with textbooks - e.g. in schools or universities.

The goals were:

  1. Create different ways of interactive learning
  2. Give an overview of the vocabulary of each chapter and language
  3. Create learning plans and evaluate learning progress
04/05 Functionality

Different languages, different colors

The dashboard of the app shows the different languages that the student is currently learning. The languages are represented by the name and color code of the school book.

On the dashboard, the student has an overview of all the textbooks he or she has loaded into the app. More books can be easily loaded

Once the user selects a book item, details about the current chapter and progress are revealed. From there he can set a training plan or start the training directly. Different chapters can be trained in parallel to facilitate faster learning.

05/05 Lernen

Four ways to learn new words

The user can choose between four modes to learn his vocabulary. The mode is selected in the dashboard prior to starting the training.

The user can improve pronunciation, index cards, listening or writing.
